Soldiers Beach Surf Club
Tony Glashoff Benefit Night
On October 1, 2007, my dad, Tony Glashoff, was surfing at Soldiers Beach when he was dumped by a wave head first into a sandbank. The impact left him conscious but unable to move, so he held his breath underwater until he passed out. He was pulled from the water and revived by surfers and members of Soldiers Beach Surf Club then airlifted to Royal North Shore hospital via the Rescue Helicopter.
My dad suffered a spinal cord injury, which has left him with impaired use of his hands and no feeling or movement from the chest down. My dad and my family endured seven months of hospitals and rehabilitation, with three trips to the Intensive Care Unit. This month my dad finally came home, much to the relief and excitement of his friends, family and best mate Diezel – our family, dog where rehabilitation continues.
The one positive we’ve been able to draw away from this traumatic time is the overwhelming support from communities such as the mining community, SLSC, surfing community and local community. Their support has allowed my family to cope emotionally with what has been a very difficult time and shown us the importance and value of community spirit.
To coordinate all the offers of assistance and give back to the community that has shown us so much support, we are holding the Tony Glashoff Benefit Night. Through the night we wish to give many people who have offered help on an individual level an avenue to show their support. In addition we also aim to give back to the community by raising funds to purchase a beach access wheelchair, which can be used by all people who suffer mobility issues in the local community.
I thank you for your assistance in advance.
Yours Sincerely,
Ben Glashoff

What is the aim of the Tony Glashoff Benefit Night?
1. To raise money for a community beach wheelchair, which will allow members of the community with mobility issues to access the beach and enjoy one of the great beauties of our local area. The beach wheelchair would be kept with and managed by local lifeguards.
2. To cover the cost of items needed for my dads care such as;
- Electric wheelchair,
- Push wheelchair,
- House modifications,
- Car modifications,
- Special bed,
- Special mattress,
- Hoist,
- Air conditioning,
- Voice recognition computer software,
- Ongoing medical care and other costs
The focus will be on getting the anticipated $55,000 needed to cover the cost of a car suitable for Tony’s needs.
3. Depending on the amount raised we would also like to contribute to Rescue Helicopter as this does a great service to the greater community as well. Also money permitting a contribution to the disabled surfers association.
Who will be attending the charity event?
Dad has been a member of the mining community for 35 years. In this time, he has worked across many mines in NSW and been involved in First Aid and Mines Rescue competitions in both NSW & QLD. He has formed many friendships and made quite an impact within the mining community, which was evident by the number of people from the industry who visited, called and emailed dad throughout his time in hospital and rehab. In addition, his brother, two brothers in law and father in law are also prominent members of the mining community. As such, there will be a large patronage of people from the mining industry who will be attending the event.
Furthermore dad has been a member of the local community for 30 years and has been apart of numerous local clubs including Surf Life Saving, Toukley Soccer Club and Blue Light Disco in various capacities.
I am a business how do I discuss contributing or donating to the benefit night?
As an organisation your support will be appreciated. Below are some suggestions of ways your organisation maybe able to help. Understandably some organisations are in better positions to assist financially with the benefit night then others. If you have an alternative way in which you can assist with raising funds to those listed bellow I would be happy to discuss them with you.
Please note that we have the Central Coast Advocate Express as a media partner and are currently looking to include a radio media partner where significant contributions will be recognized.
Gold Donations ($10,000 +) – As part of the fund raising we are looking at selling shirts, hats and beer holders to raise funds and give people from across NSW and QLD the opportunity to show their support.
As a major contributor to the benefit night ($10,000 or more) we will offer you on a first in basis your choice of the company logo (single colour print) being incorporated on the shirt, hat or beer holder or the sponsorship of the “adopt a beach program” where a disabled all terrain wheelchair will be kept at Soldiers Beach Surf Club for members of the community to use so that they can enjoy the beach with loved ones who would not otherwise get to experience the sand and the surf such as the disabled, elderly and heavily pregnant women .
I am also in discussion with the Express Advocate newspaper who have approached me regarding free advertising. As such as I am looking into the possibility that Gold Donations would include your company being advertised in association with the benefit night.
Other proposals would also be considered.
Silver Donations ($5,000 – $9,999) – For people whose tax deducible donations fall into the silver category your organizations logo (single colour print) will be incorporated into the shirt in a smaller format to that of the Gold category donation.
Auction Prizes and Raffle ticket prizes - We plan on having two raffles. If your company is donating the main prize the raffle will be named after the company and the company logo can be displayed on the night.
Auction Prize will be displayed on the website with company information.
Other donations – All donations over $2 are tax deductible and any support you are willing to give will be greatly appreciated.
I am an individual, how can I contribute to the benefit night?
The auction – There will be about 6 items auctioned on the benefit night itself. However there will be many items up for auction open to the general public to bid on who where not able to attend the benefit night.
We anticipate that we will auction the rest of the donated items through the ebay charity website (we are currently in the process of setting this up). More details will come soon.
