Patrol Member

Description
The Patrol Member is the principle provider of lifesaving functions on the
beach.
At the operational level, the major function of the Patrol Member is to ensure
effective beach safety through the provision of preventative, rescue, and first
aid actions during their rostered watch.
Responsible To
The Patrol Member is appointed by the Director of Lifesaving and is
responsible to their Patrol Captain.
DURING THE CONDUCT OF RESCUE OPERATIONS A PATROL
MEMBER’S FIRST DUTY IS TO THEIR OWN SAFETY.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Patrol Member should:
• Ensure they attend the beach in accordance with the Club’s Patrol
Roster.
• Assist their Patrol Captain to conduct a pre-patrol risk assessment to
determine whether or not the beach is to be opened or closed.
• Assist their Patrol Captain to select the safest available area to place
the flags if the beach is to be opened.
• Conduct themselves in accordance with the Club’s Patrol Operations
Manual at all times during their watch.
• Recognise, and be prepared to react, and immediately deal with any
safety related issue during their watch in accordance with the directions
of their Patrol Captain to the best of their ability.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Ideally the Patrol Member is someone who:
• Holds and SLSC Bronze Medallion or SRC Award.
• Can communicate effectively.
• Is actively interested in the safety of others.
• Is well informed of the contents of the Club’s Patrol Operations Manual.
• Is well informed of lifesaving activities and policies.
Estimated Time Commitment Required & Period of Appointment
The estimated time commitment required of a Soldiers Beach Patrol Member
is 6 hours per month.
The Patrol Member is appointed for a 12 month term.
